If you’re not from Minnesota, Nordic skiing may only be a Winter Olympics sport to you. It’s so popular here that there’s an annual Cross Country Skiing festival in Minneapolis called the City of Lakes Loppet Winter Festival
One of the most magical events during this festival is called The Luminary Loppet.
You know the Luminary Loppet has begun when, as the winter light fades, bonfires, lanterns, glowing ice sculptures and fairy lights become illuminated.
Being outside in the depth of winter is under appreciated. If it’s cold enough, the stars are forcefully bright. There is a special silence that hushes the soul. If you have a thermos of something warm (organic chicken bone broth, anyone?) you’re sure to enjoy yourself.
Adorning this contestable season with a spectacular luminary display must have been the idea of a romantic, winter loving person.
I am grateful to them, the volunteers and all of the competitors who made the Luminary Loppet available. Encore!
